89 Days

It’s not unusual for people to begin a new year with enthusiasm and goals.  It’s also not unusual for people to lose their enthusiasm and new goal focus by the end of January.   In this article I am going to give you a simple plan to achieve one, maybe two, goals in 2019.  Simple does not mean easy.  Put another way: “Everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.”

I’m not a fan of writing down a list of things I want to accomplish in the coming year.  That list just seems to clutter my mind and scatter my focus.

For two days think about, pray on, meditate on, this question: If I don’t accomplish anything else in the next 89 days, what is the one thing I want to accomplish that will have the best impact on my life?  Why two days?  Because over the course of two days things may shift in your mind.  Once you have a consistent answer to this question write it down in one sentence. This can be a personal or professional goal.  Writing this statement down is critical in that it will help bring you clarity to what you want to accomplish. Clarity is a motivator!

This is an 89-day game plan. Not 90 days, not one year. 89 Days.  This is a short enough time to stay consistently focused and long enough to get things done.  Also, the number 89 will stick in your mind.  It was also the number of one of my favorite NFL players: Gino Marchetti of the old Baltimore Colts.

Here is the blueprint for creating your 89-day plan:

  1. Write down your one sentence goal statement. It must be Specific and Measurable.
  2. Make yourself write out a list of Rewards for accomplishing this goal.
  3. Write out the specific Obstacles to achieving this goal in 89 days.
  4. Next to each obstacle write out a Solution. Be specific.
  5. For each solution write out an Action Step with a hard-due date.

I have an 89 Day Plan template that I use throughout the year. If you would like a copy send me a note here on LinkedIn.

I’ll close with a few appropriate words from Mark Twain: “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”  I hope this article helps you have a great 2019!
